EYE
HEALTH
The eyes receive the richest supply of nutrients, relatively speaking,
of any part of the body. The blood vessels in these fragile organs
are the smallest in the body, yet the demand for oxygen in the retina
is the greatest of any organ. Fortunately, the human eye has an
elaborate defense against damage caused by sunlight and oxidation.
Researchers are finding more evidence that nutrition plays an important
role in ocular health. Wearing a good pair of sunglasses is important
as well. Important nutrients for the eye include: beta carotene
and mixed carotenoids such as lutein and zeaxanthin, bioflavonoids
such as bilberry and blueberry, DHA, found in cold water fish, and
antioxidants such as vitamins A,C, E, and selenium.
