NOW Policosanol is a blend of long-chain fatty alcohols (LCFA) derived from sugar cane, a superior source of these natural plant waxes.  Non-clinical studies have shown that the fatty alcohol constituents in Policosanol possess considerable antioxidant activity, can protect serum lipids against free radical attack and support healthy immune function.  Policosanol can support cardiovascular health through these and other mechanisms.

Policosanol reduces your total cholesterol mainly by reducing your LDL-cholesterol-bad cholesterol-, which is the dominant kind in your bloodstream. At the same time, it increases your HDL-cholesterol -good cholesterol-, which exists in smaller amounts. It also reduces your triglycerides, which is fat in the blood.

Policosanol lowers total cholesterol levels by up to 21 percent, according to a study published in the February 2002 issue of the "American Heart Journal." Doses of 10 milligrams per day also decrease levels of low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, the bad form of cholesterol, by up to 29 percent and increase levels of high-density lipoprotein, or HDL, the good form of cholesterol, by up to 15 percent.

Policosanol can lower LDL cholesterol very effectively and raise protective HDL cholesterol. This compares favorably with cholesterol-lowering drugs which have the drawback of side effects such as liver dysfunction and muscle atrophy. Policosanol is free of these side effects.

What makes policosanol exciting is that it has other actions against heart disease in addition to lowering cholesterol. Like statin drugs, policosanol helps stop the formation of artery lesions.
