Vitamin D-3 2000 IU - 240 Softgels

  • High Potency
  • Structural Support
  • 2,000 IU
  • Helps Maintain Strong Bones
  • Supports Dental Health

NOW Vitamin D softgels supply this key vitamin in a highly-absorbable liquid softgel form.  Vitamin D is normally obtained from the diet or produced by the skin from the ultraviolet energy of the sun.  However, it is not abundant in food.  As more people avoid sun exposure, Vitamin D supplementation becomes even more necessary to ensure that your body receives an adequate supply.

NOW Vitamin D-3 2,000 IU, 240 Softgels helps regulate and control the metabolism of Calcium and Phosphorus by aiding in the absorption of these two minerals from the small intestine, and by directly affecting the rate at which these minerals form and maintain bone.

The diseases caused by Vitamin D deficiency are osteomalacia and rickets. Osteomalacia, found most often found in adults, results in an increase in bone fractures, a waddling walk, and muscle weakness. Rickets is a disease of the bones found in children, and include bowed hands and bowed legs due to the softening of bones.

Vitamin D, and specifically the hormone our body produces from vitamin D, is the body’s most important regulator of calcium absorption. Research shows that people low in vitamin D absorb a whopping 65% less calcium than those with adequate levels of this vitamin. Osteoporotic fractures are much more common in people with low levels of vitamin D, and the incidence of fractures are dramatically reduced with vitamin D supplementation.

Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption and calcium transport to bones.  Most people are low in Vitamin D and do not realize it. It is easy to test your D levels with a simple blood test. If you are low in D, it could lead to many health problems such as lower immune function, increased risk of multiple sclerosis, and developing heart disease.

For women who are looking to become pregnant, it is critical to have your D levels checked.  One recent study showed That there is considerable evidence that low maternal levels of 25 hydroxyvitamin D are associated with adverse outcomes for both mother and fetus in pregnancy as well as the neonate and child.

NOW Vitamin D-3 reduces the chance of peripheral arterial disease, a common circulatory problem in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to your limbs.  Studies have shown that a high intake of vitamin D can reduce the risk of various types of cancers. It helps to protect against cancers of the prostate, lung, skin, and lymphoma. A growing number of studies point to vitamin D deficiency as a risk factor for heart attacks, congestive heart failure, peripheral arterial disease (PAD), strokes, and the conditions associated with cardiovascular disease, such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

Ask your doctor to check your vitamin D level. You’ll take a simple blood test called 25- hydroxyvitamin D. Recommended levels are between 40-80 ng/ml.

Vitamin D, also known as the sunshine vitamin, can be produced in the body with mild sun exposure or consumed in food or supplements.

Adequate vitamin D intake is important for the regulation of calcium and phosphorus absorption, maintenance of healthy bones and teeth, and is suggested to supply a protective effect against multiple diseases and conditions such as cancer, type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

Vitamin D has multiple roles in the body, helping to:

Maintain the health of bones and teeth
Support the health of the immune system, brain and nervous system
Regulate insulin levels and aid diabetes management
Support lung function and cardiovascular health
Influence the expression of genes involved in cancer development.

In spite of the name, vitamin D is considered a pro-hormone and not actually a vitamin. This is because the body is capable of producing its own vitamin D through the action of sunlight on the skin, while vitamins are nutrients that cannot be synthesized by the body and must be acquired through the diet or supplements.

It is estimated that sensible sun exposure on bare skin for 5-10 minutes 2-3 times per week allows the body the ability to produce sufficient vitamin D, but vitamin D has a half-life of only two weeks, meaning that stores can run low, especially in winter. Recent studies have suggested that up to 50% of adults and children worldwide are vitamin D deficient. There are several likely factors contributing to vitamin D deficiency, which will be looked at further in this article.

Vitamin D is produced when sunlight converts cholesterol on the skin into calciol (vitamin D3). Vitamin D3 is then converted into calcidiol (25-hydroxyvitamin D3) in the liver. The kidneys then convert calcidiol into the active form of vitamin D, called calcitriol (1,25-hydroxyvitamin D3). As such, statins and other medications or supplements that inhibit cholesterol synthesis, liver function or kidney function can impair the synthesis of vitamin D.

This MNT Knowledge Center feature provides an in-depth look at recommended intake of vitamin D, its possible health benefits, foods high in vitamin D and any potential health risks of consuming vitamin D.
